Our Mission

A COMPLETE INVENTORY OF CALIFORNIA’S BIODIVERSITY

California is one of only 36 biodiversity hotspots on planet Earth. The immense scale of California’s diversity means much of it remains unexplored, with thousands of species yet to be discovered. The California All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (CalATBI) is a voucher-based, DNA-powered effort to finally discover all of California biodiversity.

CalATBI efforts include field work to find unexplored biodiversity, sequencing millions of specimens to build a DNA barcode reference library, developing next-generation technologies to accelerate discovery, and preserving biodiversity specimens and samples for the benefit of future generations.

Our goal is to save our precious biodiversity today, for tomorrow and always.
